UK regulations state that we cannot make health claims for products that do not have a medical licence.
To gain a medical licence a treatment cannot be 'holistic', ie involving a number of factors simultaneously
such as diet, exercise, supplements and natural remedies. A medical licence is also expensive to obtain
and it is unlikely that a company would incur that cost in order to licence a natural product that could
not be patented.
On the positive side European legislation is changing and health claims for traditional remedies may be
allowed in the future. The Food Standards Agency is currently processing health claims based on the
huge amount of monographs produced and the research that has been conducted .
