      Lemon Balm information

      Lemon balm is used by herbal practitioners as a digestive relaxant, to lift mood and as a treatment for cold sores. It is perhaps most commonly used in the treatment of anxiety and cold sores.

      Lemon balm has traditionally been used as a natural remedy in the treatment of:

      Anxiety and tension

      Mild depression

      Insomnia

      Indigestion, flatulence & colic

      Cold sores

      Colds & flu’s especially in children

      Teething children

      Hyperthyroidism

      Contraindications

      Hypothyroidism – research has shown that lemon balm can inhibit the binding of thyroid stimulating hormone and iodine synthesis, the conversion of T4 to active T3 and the binding of auto-antibodies found in Grave’s disease.

      Avoid if suffering from high blood pressure

      Volatile oils including citronellal, geraniol, linalool, tannins, flavonoids.

      Lemon balm is an excellent remedy that relieves wind and spasm in the digestive tract, treating flatulence, cramps and indigestion.  Lemon balm has antiviral properties and is effective in the treatment of colds and flu’s in children where there is fever.  It has a delicious lemon taste and smell and so is well liked by children.  Lemon balm calms and relaxes the nervous system so is useful in the treatment of anxiety, irritability, restlessness and insomnia.   It can also be used in cases of mild depression and low mood.   Lemon balm essential oil can be used topically in the treatment of cold sores, and the tincture can be taken internally to fight the virus from within.
